Intermediate egret (English spelling)

Japanese: チュウサギ(中鷺) - チュウサギ（英語表記）intermediate egret

A bird of the Heronidae family in the order Ciconiiformes (illustration). One of the three species of egrets that inhabit Japan. Total length is about 68 cm. It is between the size of the Great Egret and the Little Egret, which is why it is called the Intermediate Egret. However, it is closer in size to the Little Egret, and the two species are easily confused, but the Intermediate Egret's toes are black (Little Egret's are greenish-yellow). Also, during the breeding season, the Little Egret has several long crest feathers on the back of its head, but the Intermediate Egret does not (Little Egret also does not have a crest feather during the non-breeding season). It is distributed widely south of the temperate zone of the Old World.

コウノトリ目サギ科の鳥（イラスト）。日本に生息する3種のシラサギ類の一つ。全長約68cm。ダイサギとコサギの中間の大きさで，そのためチュウサギと呼ばれている。ただし，大きさはコサギのほうに近く，この2種は見まちがいやすいが，チュウサギは足指が黒い(コサギは緑黄色)ことで容易に識別できる。また，繁殖期のコサギは後頭に数本の長い冠羽があるが，チュウサギにはない(非繁殖期にはコサギにも冠羽がない)。旧世界の温帯以南に広く分布する。
