...The daffodil seen in this legend is said to be the white-flowered Narcissus nigricans, and there is another myth about the yellow-flowered daffodil (nowadays it refers to the Narcissus genus). According to this myth, Persephone was asleep wearing a crown of Narcissus flowers when Hades, the god of the underworld, touched her hand, and the daffodil turned into a yellow flower. Incidentally, the name daffodil comes from asphodelos, an unflowered flower that blooms in the land of the dead in Greek mythology, and therefore it has been planted in cemeteries since ancient times. The flower language of the Narcissus nigricans is "self-love," and the flower language of the daffodil is "unrequited love." ...

…なお，この伝説に見えるスイセンは白い花のクチベニスイセンだといわれ，黄色い花をつけるダフォディル(現在ではスイセン属をさす)には，別の神話があり，それによれば，ナルキッソスの花の冠を着けて眠っていたペルセフォネに，冥界の神ハデスが手を触れたため，スイセンは黄色い花に変わったという。ちなみに，ダフォディルの名は，ギリシア神話にある死者の国に咲く不花（ふちようか）アスフォデロスasphodelosに由来し，ゆえに古くから墓地に植えられた。クチベニスイセンの花ことばは〈自己愛〉，ダフォディルは〈報われぬ恋〉である。…
