Red River Rebellion

A rebellion by the Métis that took place near present-day Winnipeg, Canada, from 1869 to 1870. With the establishment of the Dominion of Canada in 1867, negotiations began for the transfer of Rupert Land, which had been held by the Hudson's Bay Company for about 200 years, to Canada, with the transfer scheduled for December 1, 1869. The mainly Métis residents of the Red River Colony, the only permanent settlement in the vast expanse of Rupert Land, were not involved in these negotiations at all.

1869年から70年にかけて，カナダの現ウィニペグ付近で起こったメティスによる反乱。1867年のカナダ自治領政府の成立にともない，ハドソン湾会社が約200年間にわたって領有してきたルパーツ･ランドのカナダへの委譲交渉が開始され，69年12月1日を期して譲渡が成立することになった。広大なルパーツ･ランドの唯一の定住地，レッド･リバー植民地に住むメティスを主体とする住民はこの交渉にまったくあずからなかった。
