…Some species of Euglena, such as E. gracilis Klebs, lose their chloroplasts and turn white when exposed to high temperatures of 32-35°C, ultraviolet light, or the addition of streptomycin to the culture solution. These individuals can grow and multiply in culture solutions containing organic matter, so it is speculated that the Astasia genus, which does not have naturally growing chloroplasts, is an organism that evolved from Euglena in the process of evolution. Freshwater relatives of Euglena include the fan-shaped Phacus with a hard periderm and the urn-shaped Trachelomonas , and marine or brackish water species include Eutreptia with two equal flagella and Eutreptiella with two unequal flagella. …
