One of the ranks of shrines established by the new Meiji government. Refers to prefectural and prefectural shrines. In 1871 (Meiji 4), shrines nationwide were divided into official shrines (kankokuheisha) and various shrines, and prefectural, prefectural, and village shrines were placed under the jurisdiction of local officials. Later, village shrines and unranked shrines were treated as having a rank below village shrines, with prefectural shrines at the highest level. At the end of the Pacific War (1945), there were 1,148 shrines. They were abolished in 1946 (Showa 21).
