A term in Japanese music. Also called "kaede." In shamisen music such as koto, jiuta, and nagauta, this refers to a separate melody that is created to be played together with the original melody called "honte." It can be attached to the entire piece or to a part of the piece, and can be played on the same instrument or on different instruments, such as a sangen honte and a koto kaede. In koto music, if the honte is tuned to a low range and the kaede is tuned to a high range, they can be called "bass" and "high" respectively. In Yamada school koto music, some "ji" are a type of kaede. In nagauta, a kaede on a shamisen tuned to a high range using a "kase" is called "uwajoshi," and in shinnai it is called "takane."
