A state in the northeastern corner of India, bordering Myanmar. Area: 16,500 km2, population: 1.21 million (1991). State capital: Kohima. At the northern end of the Arakan mountain range, several mountain ranges, including the Naga Hills, run from north-northeast to south-southwest, with long, narrow river valleys between them. The rivers flow mainly within Indian territory, but in the southeast they flow into Myanmar. The main occupations are continuous cropping on terraced fields in the river valleys and slash-and-burn agriculture on the mountain slopes, with rice being the main crop in the former. インド北東端,ミャンマー国境部の州。面積1万6500km2,人口121万(1991)。州都コヒマKohima。アラカン山系の北端部にあたり,ナガ丘陵など数条の山地が北北東から南南西に走り,その間に狭長な河谷が介在する。河川は主としてインド領内に流れるが,南東部ではミャンマーに流出する。河谷の棚田,棚畑での連作農業と山地斜面での焼畑農業が主たる生業で,前者の主作物は稲である。工業は製糖,製紙などがあるにすぎない。
