...But for three centuries until the mid-19th century, it was a poor rural town on the outskirts of the country, with no particular industry. In 1822, Dom Pedro declared independence from Ipiranga Hill here. São Paulo's rapid growth began with the rise of the coffee industry, especially in the second half of the 19th century, when coffee cultivation in the Paraíba River basin, based on slavery, shifted to cultivation in the northern and central parts of the state, based on wage labor.
