Whale fish - Whale fish

Japanese: クジラウオ(鯨魚) - クジラウオ（英語表記）whale fish

A general term for marine fishes belonging to the Cetominimidae, Barbourisiidae, and Rondeletiidae families of the Cetacean order. Body length is usually 10-20 cm. The head and mouth are generally remarkably large, with the head length reaching 1/4-1/3 of the body length. The eyes are degenerate, and the eye diameter is usually less than 1/7-1/10 of the length of the upper jaw. The large mouth and tiny eyes are reminiscent of a whale, hence the name. They are found in the deep seas of the open ocean all over the world, living in layers far from the bottom.

クジラウオ目のうちクジラウオ科Cetomimidae，アカクジラウオダマシ科Barbourisiidae，アンコウイワシ科Rondeletiidaeに属する海産魚の総称。体長はふつう10～20cm。一般に頭と口が著しく大きく，頭長が体長の1/4～1/3に達する。眼が退化しており，眼径は通常上あごの長さの1/7～1/10以下。この大きな口と微小な眼がクジラを想起させるのでこの名がある。全世界の外洋の深海に分布し，底から離れた層に生息する。
