…Sakai developed as a port city from the period of the Northern and Southern Courts in the 14th century, and as it reached its peak during the Muromachi period in the 15th and 16th centuries, wealthy families with the backing of its economic power carried out several printing projects. Generally, these are called the Asaino edition, the Shohei edition, the Tenmon edition, etc., after the name of the publisher or the year of publication, but they are collectively called the Sakai edition or the Sakai version. Well-known works include Dosuke's Shohei edition of the Analects of Confucius (1364), the reprint of the Complete Medical Books by Asaino, who was a doctor (1528), the Asaino edition of the Tenmon edition of the Analects of Confucius (1533), and the Setsuyoshu (1590) by Ishibe Ryosatsu, all of which were printed by wood engraving. …
