Remora (small coin shark) - Remora

Japanese:
Remora (small coin shark) - Remora
A general term for fish of the Echeneidae family of Perciformes, or one of these species. Seven species of remora are known from Japan, and all of them have a distinctive feature in that they have a modified oval-shaped sucker on the back of their head, which is the first dorsal fin, hence the name. They are also called remora. They live by using this sucker to attach themselves to the body surface, mouth, or gill openings of large animals such as large fish, sharks, sea turtles, and whales. Larger species are sometimes caught while swimming freely, but smaller species have a close relationship with their hosts.
