In any case, an estimated 5.1 to 6.5 million people were murdered throughout Europe, including the majority of the German "Jews," who numbered just under 500,000 in 1933. The Holocaust should not be attributed simply to the inhumanity of the Nazis or the madness of war, but rather it could be said to have been a way forward in Europe's response to the Jews and "Jews" it had given birth to. However, saying this does not mean that it was an inevitable or necessary outcome, nor does it in any way exonerate the Nazis and their supporters.
