Founded in 1876, it was the core company of the Mitsui Zaibatsu and the largest trading company in Japan, with overwhelming influence in domestic and overseas trade. After World War II, it was broken up into over 200 companies, but gradually integrated, and in 1959 it was fully restored as a general trading company, and in 1965 it absorbed Kinoshita Sansho to strengthen its metals division. It is one of Japan's leading trading companies, along with Mitsubishi Corporation, and deals in almost all products, including food, chemical products, and textiles, with a focus on metals and machinery. In recent years, it has been focusing on the information and communications and energy fields. Headquartered in Tokyo, it has 16 offices in Japan and 145 overseas (as of April 2007). In 2011, the company's capital was 341.4 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 9.9424 trillion yen.
