Chalcogen

Group 16 elements of the periodic table. A general term for five elements: oxygen (O), sulfur (S), selenium (Se), tellurium (Te), and polonium (Po). χαλκó ( chalkos ) is the Greek word for "elemental copper", and γενν ( genno ) means "to make". Because the main ores of copper are sulfides, such as chalcopyrite _CuFeS2 , the original meaning of "making copper ore" has been expanded to refer to these elements as mineral-forming elements. In particular, the three elements sulfur, selenium, and tellurium are sometimes referred to as chalcophile elements. With the exception of polonium, which is metallic and begins to take on a slight metallic character with tellurium, chalcogens are generally nonmetallic elements and form many chalcogenides.

周期表16族元素．酸素O，硫黄S，セレンSe，テルルTe，ポロニウムPoの5元素の総称．χαλκó(chalkos)はギリシア語の“銅元素”を表す語で，γενν(genno)は“造る”を意味する．銅の主要鉱石が硫化物，たとえば黄銅鉱(chalcopyrite)CuFeS₂であることから，もとは“銅の鉱石を造る”の意味であったものが拡張されて，これらの元素を造鉱物元素というようになった．とくに，硫黄，セレン，テルルの3元素をさして親銅元素ということもある．テルルでわずかに金属性を帯びはじめ，ポロニウムが金属性であることを除けば，一般にカルコゲンは非金属元素であり，多くのカルコゲン化物(chalcogenides)をつくる．
