A North American Indian tribe that speaks a language belonging to the Tano language group and lives in the southern Great Plains. Its population is estimated at about 3,000. They are Plains Indians who live a typical nomadic life in tepees (tents), do not farm, and engage in heroic buffalo hunting on horseback. They are known to have once been divided into seven bands. They place a bundle of ten fetishes as a guardian deity at the center of the sun dance, and perform peyote rituals using cacti as a hallucinogen. From 1832 to 1939, they drew events of their tribe twice a year on leather and left them as a calendar to tell their history.
