Zhaoqing

A prefecture-level city in the west central part of Guangdong Province, China. It has jurisdiction over three city districts and four counties, and acts as the acting governor for one county-level city (as of 2016). It has a population of 4,298,200 (2013). It is located on the north bank of the Xijiang River, the main stream of the Pearl River, and is a key location for Xijiang water transportation, with sea routes to Guangzhou, Wuzhou, and Jiangmen. It is a distribution center for agricultural products produced in the vicinity, and has industries such as food processing, chemical fertilizers, and agricultural machinery. Gold and jade are underground resources produced. In addition, inkstones made from stones produced in the vicinity are famous products known as Danxi.

Qixingyan in the north of the city is a scenic spot and resort area also known as Little Guilin. There are also many other scenic spots such as the monument to the Japanese monk Yoei (?-749), who entered China, and Dinghushan, where the Baiyun Temple is located. The Sanshui Line (Sansui-Maoming) passes through the city, making it a key location for land and sea connections.

中国、広東(カントン)省中部西寄りの地級市。3市轄区、4県を管轄し、1県級市の管轄代行を行う（2016年時点）。人口429万8200（2013）。珠江(しゅこう)本流の西江(せいこう)北岸に位置し、西江水運の要地で、広州(こうしゅう)、梧州(ごしゅう)、江門(こうもん)に航路が開かれている。付近で生産される農産物の集散地で、食品加工、化学肥料、農機具などの工業がある。地下資源としては金や玉石(たまいし)を産出する。また、付近で産出する石を利用した硯(すずり)は端渓(たんけい)とよばれる名品である。

　市の北部の七星岩(しちせいがん)は小桂林(しょうけいりん)ともよばれる景勝地、保養地である。ほかに日本人入唐(にっとう)僧栄叡(ようえい)（？―749）の記念碑や、白雲寺がある鼎湖山(ていこさん)などの名勝に富む。市域を三茂線（三水(さんすい)―茂名(もめい)）が通過し、水陸連絡の要地となっている。
