Eridanos is the name of a Greek river god, but it is likened to nearby great rivers such as the Nile in Egypt, the Euphrates in Babylonia, and the Po in Rome. Alpha Achernar is at the southern end of this constellation, but it cannot be seen from the main island of Japan, meaning the end of a river. Beta Achernar is near Rigel in Orion.
