Aoyagi Bridge - Aoyagi Bridge

...This bridge was built at a key transportation point where the Tosando (and Tokaido after the Nagaokakyo period) leading to the southern edge of Omi Kokufu crossed the Seta River. It is also called Seta Bridge, and in the Tokaido Meisho Zue (Illustrated Guide to Famous Places on the Tokaido), it is called Aoyagi Bridge. It seems that the bridge had a Chinese-style design when it was rebuilt in the Kamakura period, and since then it has been commonly called Karahashi (Chinese-style bridge). However, when it was rebuilt in 1894 (Meiji 27), the words Seta Bridge (Setahashi) were carved into the shingles, and this became the official name.
