Gakanji Temple

Japanese: 瓦官寺 - がかんじ

This temple was built in Changgan, south of the capital Jiankang (Nanjing), in the second year of the Xingning era (364) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty in China. It is also written as Tile Coffin Temple. It was so named because it was originally the site of a government-run pottery workshop. It was famous for the three great things: the gold statue made by Dai Kui, the jade statue sent from Shishi Country, and the "Vimalakirti" painting by Gu Kaizhi. It is also known for the fact that the Tiled Official Temple was one of the great masters of Tiles. It was also a famous temple in the Tang Dynasty, and Li Bai wrote the poem "Visiting the Tiled Official Temple." It was later renamed Wuxing Temple, Shengyuan Temple, Chongsheng Kaidan Temple, and Fengyou Temple, and by the Ming Dynasty it had regained its former name.

中国，東晋の興寧2年(364)，都の建康(南京市)の南部，長干の地に建立された寺。瓦棺寺とも書かれる。もと官営の製陶工房の土地であったのでこの名がある。戴逵（たいき）が制作した金像，師子国からおくられた玉像，顧愷之（こがいし）が描いた《維摩図》が三絶とよばれて有名であった。また天台大師智顗（ちぎ）がここで講説したことでも知られる。唐代においても名刹であり，李白に《瓦官寺に遊ぶ》の詩がある。その後，呉興寺，昇元寺，崇勝戒壇寺，鳳游寺と名を改めて明代にいたり，ふたたび旧名に復した。
