《Saint Francis, the Clown of God》

Born as the eldest son of a wealthy architect in Rome, after graduating from high school he plunged into the world of film (especially documentaries), which he had been interested in for a long time, and made short documentary films about the ecology of fish. After the box office failure of "Germany Year Zero" from the aforementioned "War Trilogy" and his "illicit affair" with Hollywood actress Ingrid Bergman (they were officially married in 1950), he had no hits ("Stromboli" (1949), "Europe 1951" (1952), starring Bergman, were later first recognized by the French "Nouvelle Vague"). In terms of his work, from around "Saint Francis, Jester of God" (1950) he gradually became interested in the theme of religious salvation of the soul, which was criticized by left-wing critics as a "conversion from neorealism."
