This old town, located in Kumage District, Kagoshima Prefecture, consists of the northern half of Yakushima and Kuchinoerabu Island. The main settlement is Miyanoura on the north coast of Yakushima, and there are regular air and sea routes from Kagoshima City. Field farming and fishing are both small-scale, but in 1959, a firebrick and abrasives factory was established in Miyanoura, taking advantage of the abundant electricity. As part of Kirishima-Yaku National Park (now Yakushima National Park), tourism development is also progressing. In 1993, Yakushima was registered on the list of natural heritage sites under the World Heritage Convention, and in 2005, Nagata Beach on Yakushima was registered on the Ramsar Convention list. In October 2007, it merged with Yaku Town, Kumage District, to form Yakushima Town. 298.95 km2. Population: 6,813 (2005). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
