Since R. Bloom gave the scientific name Paranthropus robustus to a fossil excavated at Kromdraai in South Africa in 1938, many fossils have been discovered in South and East Africa. The first fossil from East Africa was a skull fossil named Zinjanthropus boijii by L. Leakey in 1959, but Leakey himself soon changed the scientific name to Australopithecus boijii. Today, the whole species is considered to be one species, and is often called Australopithecus robustus.
