Krzenek

Japanese:
Krzenek
An Austrian Jewish composer, also known as Kuchenek. He studied under the composer Schreker in his native Vienna and Berlin. In Berlin, he developed close friendships with Busoni and Scherchen. Under the influence of his teacher Schreker, he started out in the late romantic style, but his compositions moved on to atonal and neoclassical styles, and he gained instant fame with his opera Johnny Plays (1926), which incorporated jazz idioms. After returning to Vienna, he introduced twelve-tone technique (twelve-tone music) through his interactions with Berg and Webern. He completed the opera Charles V (1933, revised in 1954), but due to Nazi oppression, he fled to the United States in 1938 and obtained citizenship in 1945. He continued to compose prolifically after his exile, and his choral piece Lamentations of Jeremiah (1941), which used his unique twelve-tone technique, influenced Stravinsky. From the late 1950s, he adopted the technique of musique seriale. He is a prolific author, and his correspondence with philosopher Adorno (1929-1964) is a valuable testimony of 20th century cultural history.
