Yaqui - Yaki (English spelling)

Japanese: ヤキ - やき（英語表記）Yaqui

A Uto-Aztec-speaking indigenous people who live mainly in autonomous towns and villages in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico. The population is about 7,000, 90% of whom also speak Spanish (1970). Their main occupation is growing corn, beans, and pumpkins, but they also raise cattle and sheep, and hunting and gathering have not lost their importance. The Yaquis are particularly rebellious among the indigenous peoples of Mexico, and did not submit to the Spanish conquerors until the Jesuits arrived in 1617. After that, under the influence of the Jesuits, they became more autonomous, and frequently attempted rebellions against the Spanish colonial government and the Mexican government.
