Dutch poet and comic playwright. Born in Amsterdam to a wealthy shoemaker, he initially aspired to be a painter, but eventually turned to literature. He was a passionate man who was repeatedly unsuccessful in love affairs, and died at the young age of 33, but he remains immortal as a genius in 17th-century Dutch literature. From the age of 27, he wrote comedies such as The Cow (1612) and The Miller (1613), and then the comedy The Moor (1615) and the masterpiece The Spanish Brabants (1617), which drew inspiration from Spanish "villain novels" and vividly depicted a slice of the lives of ordinary people in the contemporary commercial city of Amsterdam, earned him fame as a comic playwright.

オランダの詩人，喜劇作家。裕福な靴屋の子としてアムステルダムに生まれ，はじめ画家を志したが，やがて文学に転じた。多情多感で再三の恋愛にやぶれ，33歳の若さで没したが，17世紀オランダ文壇の異才として不滅の名を残した。27歳のころから《牝牛》(1612)，《粉屋》(1613)などの笑劇を書き，ついで喜劇《ムーア人》(1615)，スペインの〈悪者小説〉からモティーフを得て，同時代の商業都市アムステルダムの庶民生活の断面を鮮やかに描いた傑作《スペイン系ブラバント人》(1617)を書いて喜劇作家として名声を得た。
