1585‐1618 Dutch poet and comic playwright. Born in Amsterdam to a wealthy shoemaker, he initially aspired to be a painter, but eventually turned to literature. He was a passionate man who was repeatedly unsuccessful in love affairs, and died at the young age of 33, but he remains immortal as a genius in 17th-century Dutch literature. From the age of 27, he wrote comedies such as The Cow (1612) and The Miller (1613), and then the comedy The Moor (1615) and the masterpiece The Spanish Brabants (1617), which drew inspiration from Spanish "villain novels" and vividly depicted a slice of the lives of ordinary people in the contemporary commercial city of Amsterdam, earned him fame as a comic playwright.
