…A group of seaweeds in the brown algae family Laminaria. About 18 species have been found off the coast of Japan, but the edible ones include Laminaria japonica Areschoug (illustration), L. ochotensis Miyabe, L. angustata Kjellm. (illustration), L. longissima Miyabe, L. religiosa Miyabe, Arthrothamnus bifidus (Gmelin) Rupr. (illustration), L. coriacea Miyabe (also known as Atsuba kombu), L. longipedalis Okam. (also known as Kukinaga kombu), Kjellmaniella gyrata (Kjellm.) Miyabe (illustration), and L. cichorioides Miyabe. The first five species are the most commonly used. It grows on rocky reefs deeper than the low tide line facing the open ocean from Miyagi Prefecture northward, especially in Hokkaido.
