Blowpipe analysis

Blowpipe analysis

Dry qualitative analysis using a blowpipe. A blowpipe is a metal tube that is blown into by placing one end of the tube with the mouth and blowing air from the other end into the flame, causing the flame to fall sideways and become elongated, hitting the sample packed in the hole on the charcoal. This allows observation of phenomena such as color changes in the ignited sample, gas generation, and melting. The metals in the sample can also be identified by the color and shape of the metal oxides that sublimate onto the charcoal. The flame can be freely changed; for example, an oxidizing flame is obtained by placing the tip of the tube in the flame and blowing, and a reducing flame is obtained by placing the tube outside the flame. It was often used as a simple method to detect the metal components of minerals, but it is one of the classical analytical methods that is rarely used nowadays.
