Also called family rank. Family status. Refers to the traditional qualifications of a family. Especially during the Edo period, the idea that the family was more important than the individual and that family rank, which indicates social status, should be respected, was widespread not only among the nobles but also among samurai and commoners. Both samurai and commoners were evaluated by their family rank, which took precedence over their personal abilities, and were obligated to observe the lifestyle, rites, and customs appropriate to their social status. This custom was preserved as a feudal family system even under modern law after the Meiji Restoration. 家柄ともいう。家の格式。家にそなわった伝統的な資格をさす。とりわけ江戸時代には,個人よりも家が重んじられ,社会的地位を示す家柄を尊重するという観念が,公家のみならず,武家,庶民の間にも行き渡っていた。武士も庶民も,個人の能力に優先するこの家格によって評価され,その社会的地位に応じた生活様式,儀礼,習慣を守るよう義務づけられていた。このしきたりは明治維新以後,近代法のもとでもなお封建的家族制度として温存された。
