Hamhung - Sightseeing

The capital of South Hamgyong Province, North Korea. One of the country's leading cities for heavy chemical industry. The city is located on the left bank of the Seongcheon River and occupies the eastern part of the Hamhung Plain. In 1960, the city was reorganized into a metropolitan city by incorporating Hungnam City, Taecho County, and Hamju County.

Hamhung is an old city, but it was the economic center of the Kansai region, known for its distribution of agricultural and marine products and for its regular markets. In 1927, the Noguchi Conglomerate (Nichitsu Conglomerate) moved in and built hydroelectric power plants on the Bujeon River and the Chosin River, and established chemical fertilizer and gunpowder factories producing calcium carbonate nitrogen and ammonium sulfate in Hongu and Hungnam in the southeast, transforming the area into a heavy chemical industrial area. However, it was reduced to ashes during the Korean War. After the war, it was rebuilt with a new look, and produced chemical fertilizers as well as polyvinyl chloride, phenolic resin, and vinylon, becoming the central production base for heavy chemical industry in North Korea. The city is home to the National Museum, the Hamhung Branch of the Academy of Sciences, Hamhung Medical University, and the University of Chemistry.

北朝鮮、咸鏡南道(かんきょうなんどう／ハムギョンナムド)の道都。同国屈指の重化学工業都市。市街地は城川江左岸にあり咸興平野の東部を占めている。1960年、都市行政区画の改編によって興南市、退潮郡、咸州郡を編入して広域市制をとっている。

　咸興は古い都市であるが、農産物や水産物の集散と定期市(いち)で知られた関北地方の経済的中心地であった。1927年野口コンツェルン（日窒(にっちつ)コンツェルン）が進出し、赴戦江(ふせんこう／プチョンカン)、長津江(ちょうしんこう／チャンチンカン)に水力発電所をつくり、南東部の本宮や興南に石灰窒素、硫安を製造する化学肥料工場と火薬工場を新設し、一躍重化学工業地帯に変貌(へんぼう)させた。しかし朝鮮戦争の戦禍にあい灰燼(かいじん)に帰した。戦後、装いを新たにして再建され、化学肥料のほか塩化ビニル、フェノール樹脂、ビニロンを生産し、北朝鮮の重化学工業の中心的生産基地となった。市内には国立博物館、科学院咸興分院、咸興医大、化学大学がある。
