Colorful things

A term used in vaudeville halls. Currently, in Tokyo vaudeville halls, iromono refers to other performing arts besides rakugo (manzai, music, magic, paper cutting, acrobatics, vocal imitation, etc.). In the Edo period, iromono also included hundred-eyed, eight-person comedy, and utsushi-e. However, during the Bunka era (1804-18), a storyteller called rakugo iromono, and in modern times, the term came to refer to other performing arts that were added as iromono to the core performing arts at vaudeville halls, such as kodan, rakugo, gidayu, and naniwabushi. There are various theories about the origin of the word iromono, but in the Kansai region, the performing arts hall is called iromono seat.

寄席(よせ)用語。現在東京の寄席では、落語のほかの諸演芸（漫才、音曲(おんぎょく)、奇術、紙切り、曲芸、声帯模写など）をさして色物といっている。江戸時代には百眼(ひゃくまなこ)、八人芸、写し絵なども色物として行われた。しかし、文化年間（1804～18）に講釈師が落語を色物とよんだこともあり、近代に及んで、講談、落語、義太夫(ぎだゆう)、浪花節(なにわぶし)など寄席の中心をなす演芸に対して、色どりとして加入する他の演芸を色物というようになった。色物の語源については諸説があるが、関西では演芸場のことを色物席とよんでいる。
