A city in the southwestern tip of Ishikawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. The city has developed around Daishoji, Iburihashi, the hot springs of Katayamazu, Yamashiro, and Yamanaka. Daishoji, the center of the city, was a temple town of Daishoji, one of the five temples of Hakusan, in the Middle Ages, and a castle town of the Daishoji Domain in the Edo Period. The plains are a prolific producer of Kaga rice, and the industry is thriving with silk and rayon textiles and bicycle parts. Traditional crafts such as Yamanaka lacquerware and Kutani ware are also practiced. It is blessed with good transportation access via the Hokuriku Main Line and Hokuriku Expressway, and close to Komatsu Airport, natural beauty belonging to the Echizen Kaga Kaigan Quasi-National Park, abundant hot springs in Katayamazu, Yamashiro, and Yamanaka, and many ancient shrines and temples, and is developing as a tourist city. In June 1993, Katano Kamoike was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In October 2005, Yamanaka Town, Enuma County, was incorporated into the city. 305.87km2 . 71,887 people (2010).

石川県南西端の市。1958年市制。市街は大聖寺(だいしょうじ),動橋(いぶりはし),温泉の片山津,山代,山中などに発達。中心の大聖寺は中世は白山五院の一つ大聖寺の門前町,江戸時代は大聖寺藩の城下町であった。平野部は加賀米の多産地で,工業では絹・人絹織物,自転車部品の生産が盛ん。山中塗や九谷焼などの伝統工芸も行われる。北陸本線,北陸自動車道が通じ,小松空港に近いという交通の便の良さ,越前加賀海岸国定公園に属する自然美,片山津,山代,山中の豊富な温泉に恵まれ,古社寺も多く,観光都市として発展している。1993年6月片野鴨池がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2005年10月江沼郡山中町を編入。305.87km2。7万1887人(2010)。
