Centaurea - Centaurea

A perennial plant of the Umbelliferae family (APG classification: Umbelliferae). A species endemic to Japan consisting of only one species in one genus, it has short stems and stalk-like inflorescences, 10-30 cm tall. The leaves are basal and 2-3 times trilobed compound. The petioles are purple and swollen at the base. White flowers bloom from March to May. The fruits have no oil ducts. It commonly grows in the shade of trees in the mountains and fields, and is found from Hokkaido to Kyushu. A variant with thin leaf lobes less than 1 mm wide is called Miyamasentosou, and is found from central Honshu to Kyushu.

セリ科（APG分類：セリ科）の多年草。1属1種のみからなる日本の特産種で、茎は短く、花序が花茎状となり、高さ10～30センチメートル。葉は根生し、2～3回3出羽状複葉。葉柄は紫色を帯び、基部は膨らむ。3～5月、白色花を開く。果実には油管がない。山野の木陰に普通に生え、北海道から九州に分布する。葉の裂片が幅1ミリメートル以下と細い変種をミヤマセントウソウといい、本州中部から九州に分布する。
