Chinese soldier and politician. Born in Guizhou Province. Graduated from the Japanese Military Academy in 1916 (Taisho 5). While in Japan, he joined the China Tongminghui and participated in the anti-Yuan Shikai political struggle after the Xinhai Revolution. In 1924, he became deputy principal of the Huangpu Military Academy, then commander of the First Corps of the National Revolutionary Army in the Northern Expedition, and also served as chief of staff, helping Chiang Kai-shek. After the Manchurian Incident, he attempted to reach a compromise with Japan, and while chairman of the Beijing Military Committee, he concluded the Meizu-He Yingqin Agreement in 1935, helping the Japanese army control North China. In the midst of the Sino-Japanese War, he became commander-in-chief of the Army in 1939, and after the war, in 1947, he represented China at the United Nations Security Council Chiefs of Staff Meeting. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, he fled to Taiwan and was active in the MRA (Moral Re-Armament Movement, now IC = Initiatives of Change) and other groups. He also held important positions such as chairman of the Taiwan Strategic Advisory Committee.
