A Meiji period letter magazine. First published on March 10, 1877, by a Tokyo paper manufacturing branch. At the beginning of the Meiji period, when many magazines such as Marumaru Chinbun and Houtan Zasshi placed importance on letters to the editor, this magazine started out as a serious letter magazine for young people, focusing on compositions by elementary school students. The contents of the letters were often textbook-style stereotypes dealing with morality and social advancement, but gradually became more literary in tone. It was published almost weekly, and by 1901, it became a monthly magazine towards the end of its run. Many Meiji period literary figures such as Ozaki Koyo, Omachi Keigetsu, and Tayama Katai were avid readers and contributors to this magazine, and by getting young literature-loving people into the habit of submitting letters, it contributed to laying the foundations for Meiji literature.
