A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods. Son of Nagahide. His mother was the adopted daughter (niece) of Oda Nobunaga. His childhood name was Nabe. He was commonly known as Gorozaemon. In 1585 (Tensho 13), he inherited most of his father's territory, Echizen Province (Fukui Prefecture), and Nomi County, Kaga Province (Ishikawa Prefecture), but in the same year and in 1586, due to his vassals' violation of military discipline, his territories were confiscated by Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi, and he was reduced to 40,000 koku in Wakasa and then Matsuto, Kaga Province. However, as a result of his subsequent participation in the Siege of Odawara and the Korean Expedition, in 1598 (Keicho 3), he was granted an additional 85,000 koku in Ishikawa and Nomi County, Kaga Province, and moved to Komatsu Castle (Komatsu City), where he rose to the rank of Junior Third Rank and Councillor. In the Battle of Sekigahara in 1615, he was fighting against Maeda Toshinaga in Kaga and did not take part in the campaign, so his land was confiscated and he was forced to live in seclusion in Shinagawa, Edo, but in 1616, through the good offices of Tokugawa Hidetada, who had been a long-time friend, he was given 10,000 koku in Furuwatari, Hitachi Province (Sakuragawa Village, Ibaraki Prefecture). After that, in 1619 (Genna 5), he was given an additional 10,000 koku, and in 1620, he was given an additional 30,000 koku and moved to Tanagura, Mutsu Province (Tanagura Town, Fukushima Prefecture), and in 1627, he was given over 100,000 koku in the four counties of Shirakawa, Ishikawa, Tamura, and Iwase in Mutsu Province, becoming the lord of Shirakawa Castle (Shirakawa City).
