When a solid is heated, the atoms that make up the solid vibrate more violently, and electrons obtain energy from the atomic vibrations and are released from the solid. This phenomenon is called thermionic emission, and the electrons are called thermal electrons. Thermionic emission was discovered by TA Edison in 1884, and research into it was carried out by OW Richardson, so it is also called the Edison effect or Richardson effect. …
