[History of research into pulmonary tuberculosis]
Research on pulmonary tuberculosis had already begun in the 17th and 18th centuries, before R. Koch discovered the tuberculosis bacillus. For example, the 17th-century Dutch physician F. Sylvius described tuberculous nodules, and the British physician Matthew Baillie (1761-1823) also described pulmonary tuberculosis in detail in his Morbid Anatomy of the Organs of the Body (1793). In the 19th century, the French physician RTH Laennec, who invented the stethoscope, divided pulmonary tuberculosis into exudative and proliferative types after dissecting many tuberculosis patients (1819).
