1610‐88 He was an Anglo-Irish politician who played an active role as a royalist during the Puritan Revolution in England. Born into a distinguished Irish aristocratic family, he served as a general in the British army during the Catholic Ulster Rebellion of 1641 and was instrumental in putting down the rebellion. After Cromwell's invasion of Ireland (1649), he fled to Paris, France, and served under King Charles II. After the Restoration of the monarchy, he worked to rebuild the economy as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1661-69, 1677-84), and was created a duke in 1682.
