...Around the same time, Canude, who was beginning to emphasize and prove the uniqueness of film in comparison to other arts, came to view theatricality in film, and especially the works of Film Dahl, which simply filmed plays, as cinema's enemy, and came to claim that the "ekranist," or "artist of the screen," "must transform reality into the dream of his mind and manipulate light to express the state of the soul."

NV Lindsay's The Art of the Moving Picture, known as the starting point of film criticism in America, was published in 1915, the same year that DW Griffith's masterpiece The Birth of a Nation was released. The poet Lindsay, for example, likened movie theaters to the darkness of the burial chambers of pyramids, and compared actress Mary Pickford to the woman in Botticelli's painting, and viewed film in analogy with painting and other arts. He reduced the essence of film to three elements: "action," "intimacy," and "splendor," and defined it as "moving film is sculpture given movement, intimacy film is painting in motion, and splendor film is moving architecture."
