Compensator

Japanese: 補償板 - ほしょうばん（英語表記）compensator

An optical element used to change the phase difference between two orthogonal linearly polarized components is called a phase shifter, and one with a variable phase difference is called a compensator. Examples include the Babinet or Babinet-Soleil compensator, which is made by combining prisms and parallel plane plates cut from birefringent crystals. Elements with a fixed phase difference such as π/2 or π are called 1/4 wave plates and 1/2 wave plates, respectively, and are often made by cleaving a mica plate. [Tako Toshiharu]

直交する二つの直線偏光成分の間の位相差を変化させるために用いる光学素子を移相子といい，とくに位相差の可変なものを補償板という。バビネ，またはバビネ=ソレイユの補償板などがあり，複屈折結晶から切り出したプリズムや平行平面板を組み合わせて構成される。また，位相差がπ/2,πなどの一定した素子をそれぞれ1/4波長板，1/2波長板などといい，雲母板をへき開したものが多く用いられる。【田幸敏治】
