A mountain in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture. It is 695 meters above sea level. The base rock is granite, and on top of that is a massif of volcanic rocks such as rhyolite, pine resin rock, and andesite that were erupted by tertiary volcanic activity. Near the summit, there are virgin forests, ferns, and mosses, and the habitat of the Japanese scops owl, forest green frog, and small cicada. Horaiji Temple, located halfway up the mountain, is said to have been founded by the hermit Rishu, and during the Edo period, the temple was granted 1,350 koku of land. The mountain gate, which has survived several fires, and six buildings, including the main hall of the Toshogu Shrine on the mountain, are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The village in front of the temple is Kadoya, and there is the Mount Horaiji Natural Science Museum, which is known for its collection and exhibition. It has been designated a national place of scenic beauty and natural monument, and is a tourist base for Tenryu-Okumikawa Quasi-National Park. [Gohei Ito] A 695m high mountain in the north of Shinshiro City. It has long been the subject of mountain worship and a sacred place for ascetic monks. Next to the cliff known as Kagamiiwa stands the main hall of the ancient temple Horaiji, said to have been founded in 703 (the third year of the Taiho era).
