A perennial plant of the orchid family (APG classification: Orchidaceae). The tuberous root is thickened and the tip is palmately divided. The flower stalk is 20-30 cm tall with several alternate leaves at the bottom. From June to August, a dozen or so crimson-purple flowers, each about 1 cm in diameter, bloom at the top of the stem. The lip petal is about 1 cm long with conspicuous markings and has three lobes at the tip. The spur is about 1.5 cm long and somewhat thick. It grows in slightly moist grasslands in high mountains, and is distributed along the Pacific coast of Honshu north of the Chubu region, Hokkaido, eastern China, and Alaska.

The broad genus of Acanthurus is characterized by the fact that the adhesive body under the pollen mass is wrapped in a bag called a vesicle. There are about 100 species in the Northern Hemisphere, and in Japan, other species include Onoe orchid, Nyohochidori, and Ucho orchid. In the new classification, Onoe orchid is in the genus Kamomelan, and Nyohochidori and Ucho orchid are in the genus Chamaecyparis.

ラン科（APG分類：ラン科）の多年草。塊根は肥厚し、先端が掌状に分裂する。花茎は高さ20～30センチメートル、下部に葉を数枚互生する。6～8月、茎頂に径約1センチメートルの紅紫色花を十数個開く。唇弁は約1センチメートルで斑紋(はんもん)が目だち、先端は3裂する。距(きょ)は長さ約1.5センチメートル、やや太い。高山のやや湿った草原に生え、中部地方以北の本州、北海道、および中国東部、アラスカの太平洋沿いに分布する。

　広義のハクサンチドリ属は、花粉塊の下にある粘着体が小胞とよばれる袋に包まれることで特徴づけられる。北半球に約100種あり、日本にはほかに、オノエラン、ニョホウチドリ、ウチョウランなどが分布する。新しい分類では、オノエランはカモメラン属、ニョホウチドリとウチョウランはウチョウラン属となっている。
