An annual plant of the Asteraceae family native to South Africa that is good for spring flower beds and potted plants. There are about 60 species, but the one that is usually cultivated is Ursinia anethoides NEBr. It grows 30-40cm tall, with pinnate compound leaves that grow alternately and branch upright. The buds at the end face downward, but when they open they face upward and produce beautiful orange flowers. The flowers are 5cm in diameter, and the base of the ray florets has black-purple spots that look like rings. When the seeds of the central tubular flowers ripen, the bracts become dry and membrane-like, and are scattered by the wind. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
