...Interest in the spatial progression of regional phenomena and zonal arrangements, such as the topographical sequence from the coast to the mountains and the arrangement of climatic zones from the equator to the poles, appeared as early as the Greek and Roman eras, but the recognition of zonal structure according to scientific criteria came only after the 19th century. Traditionally, parallels such as the Tropic of Capricorn were used to mark the boundaries of climatic zones, but in 1817 A. von Humboldt created the first isotherm map, and in 1879 A. Supan proposed a new division of climatic zones using isotherms. Later, W. Köppen improved on this method, placing emphasis on the correspondence with vegetation maps, achieving a world climate division that is of wide utility. ...
