In addition to draining sewage, they also serve as underground joint pipes for water supply and gas, with the mains having a large cross-section of 6m wide and 5m high. In Germany, construction of sewers began in Hamburg in 1842 under the direction of the Englishman William Lindley (1808-1900). In Munich, construction began in 1858 at the suggestion of M. von Pettenkofer, and construction began in Berlin around the same time.
