COD is an abbreviation. Along with biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), it is an index of the degree of water pollution. It is the amount of oxidant consumed when oxidizing organic substances in water, converted into the amount of oxygen, and is a typical index of the amount of organic pollutants in lakes, ponds, and wastewater. The unit is ppm or mg L -1 . The higher the value, the greater the amount of organic pollutants. Potassium permanganate KMnO 2 or potassium dichromate K 2 Cr 2 O 7 is used as the oxidant. In the JIS water quality test method, the amount of potassium permanganate consumed at 100 °C for 30 min is converted into the amount of oxygen consumed and shown as COD. To measure, a certain excess amount of potassium permanganate is added to the sample water to make it acidic, and then heated in a boiling water bath for 30 min. A certain amount of sodium oxalate is then added to the remaining potassium permanganate to reduce and decolorize it, and the amount of potassium permanganate consumed is determined by back titration with potassium permanganate solution. Of the organic substances in water, carbonaceous matter is relatively easily oxidized, while nitrogenous matter is less susceptible to oxidation. The Basic Law for the Environment sets standard values of 1 to 8 ppm for lakes, marshes, and oceans.
