A Byzantine popular version of the Iliad was compiled by Konstantinos Hermoniakos (first half of the 14th century), drawing on the Homeric fables of John Tsetses and the Chronicles of Constantine Manasses, and moving ever further away from the classic Homer. His series of poems, The Tale of the Birds, The Tale of the Four Legs, and The Life of the Venerable Ass, as well as the prose works The Tale of the Fruits and The Tale of the Fishes, draw on the animal and plant world as material, but treat it no longer as an allegory but as social satire. …
