〘 noun 〙① A place where people gather. Also, a building or room for that purpose. A meeting place. ※Yonezawa Honshasekishu (1283) 8 "There were many instances of rudeness as a place for drinking parties and poetry gatherings" [Shunju Zuo Zhuan - Cheng Gong 11]② One of the facilities set up in the homes of nobles, samurai, temples and shrines. It developed especially in the early Muromachi period, and was used for meetings for entertainment such as poetry gatherings, tea contests and moon viewing, and the rooms were decorated with many Chinese items and paintings. ※Mumyosho (around 1211) "When people started to gather at these times, it was first the furnishings of meeting places"③ During the Edo period, it referred to an office where people gathered for various purposes. (a) An office for a cooperative such as a stock association of merchants. *Beio Kairan Jikki (1877) by Kume Kunitake, vol. 2: "'Royal Exchange' was an important trading place for determining the market price of trade goods." (B) An exchange for rice, gold, silver, ginned cotton, etc. *Ukiyo-zoshi, Wankyu II (1691), vol. 1: "They stopped selling their goods by pawning them on the pedestrian street, and the silver exchange (kuwaisho) immediately sank into Dotonbori." (C) An issuing office for notes issued by various feudal domains. (D) A monopoly agency when various feudal domains monopolized domestic products. (E) A meeting place for the self-government of cities such as Edo and Osaka. Also an office for town officials. *Storybook, Tosei Teuchisho (1681), vol. 5: "That elder called a group of five to the town's exchange ( kuhaisho ) that evening." (F) An administrative office within a red-light district. An inspection station. ※Ninjyohon, Shunshoku Tatsumien (1833-35) First "When you put yourself in their shoes , it's hard to imagine a comfortable life in a stressful office." (To) Trade offices of various feudal domains when ports were opened at the end of the Edo period. ④ During the Edo period, this was an office established by the Matsumae domain in the fishing grounds of Ezo , mainly for the purpose of collecting taxes.

〘名〙① 人の集会する所。また、そのための建物や室。会宿。※米沢本沙石集(1283)八「酒宴の座席、詩歌の会所として無礼の事共多侍り」 〔春秋左伝‐成公一一年〕② 公家、武家、寺社の住宅に設けられた施設の一つ。室町初期に特に発達し、歌会、闘茶、月見等の遊戯娯楽のための会合に用いられ、唐物、唐絵などを多数陳列する座敷飾りがなされた。※無名抄(1211頃)「このころ人々の会につらなりてみれば、まづ会所のしつらひよりはじめて」③ 江戸時代、種々の目的をもって人の集合する事務所をいう。(イ) 株仲間商人などの組合事務所。※米欧回覧実記(1877)〈久米邦武〉二「『ロヤルエキテンチ』は、貿易品の市価を商定する、商法緊要の会所なれば」(ロ) 米や金銀、繰綿などの取引所。※浮世草子・椀久二世(1691)上「三枚肩をやめて歩行路に家質置て其銀会所(クヮイショ)よりすぐに道頓堀に沉ける」(ハ) 諸藩の発行した藩札などの発行事務所。(ニ) 諸藩が国産品の専売を行なう場合の専売機関。(ホ) 江戸、大坂をはじめ都市の自治のための集会所。また、町役人の事務所。※咄本・当世手打笑(1681)五「彼年寄殿、其晩に町の会所(クイショ)え五人組をよびあつめて」(ヘ) 遊郭内の管理事務所。検番。※人情本・春色辰巳園(1833‐35)初「その身になって見るときは、辛気心苦(しんきしんく)の会所(クヮイショ)にて、なかなかたやすきくらしにあらず」(ト) 幕末開港時の諸藩貿易事務所。④ 江戸時代、松前藩が蝦夷(えぞ)の地の諸漁場に、主として徴税のために設けた役所。
