Ereǧli (English spelling)
Ancient Heraclea Pontica. A port city on the Black Sea in north-central Turkey. Founded as a Greek colony around 560 BC. Burned by the Roman army in 74 BC, it was rebuilt by the Romans. It was occupied by the Turks around 1360 and developed as a trading center for the Genoese settlers. There is a cave nearby, where legend has it that Hercules descended to capture Cerberus, the guardian dog of the underworld. The Eregli Basin behind it contains the country's largest coal mine, and high-quality coal is shipped from the port of Eregli. In 1965, the largest integrated steel plant in the Middle East was completed, making it a center of heavy industry. It meets the domestic demand for hot and cold pressed steel sheets, steel wire, and tinplate, and is exported. It is connected to Zonguldak by road and to Istanbul by sea. Population 63,776 (1990 estimate).
