French novelist. His real name was Frédéric Charles Bargone. He was born in Lyon. He visited many Asian countries as a naval officer. He made his debut with his collection of short stories, The Smoke of Opium (1904), and won the Prix Goncourt for Les Civilisés (1905), set in Saigon. His Naval Battle (1909) drew much attention for its portrayal of a Japanese naval officer during the Russo-Japanese War. He was elected a member of the Academy in 1935, and has written books on Oriental studies and travelogues that discuss the spirit of China and Japan, as well as writings about his predecessors Pierre Loti and Pierre Louÿs.
